Lewandowski returning to Bayern for treatment on collateral ligament injury

Robert Lewandowski has returned to Bayern Munich to receive treatment on a knee injury, Poland have confirmed.

The striker sustained damage to the collateral ligament of his right knee during the 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Andorra, in which he scored twice.

Poland issued a statement on Monday to confirm Lewandowski will miss their match with England on Wednesday in order to avoid the risk of aggravating the injury.

The 32-year-old will instead return to Germany for further treatment, which is expected to last from five to 10 days.

The news will be of concern to Bayern coach Hansi Flick ahead of a tough run of fixtures for the Bundesliga leaders.

Bayern face RB Leipzig on April 3, four days before the first leg of their Champions League qua…

PSG president Al-Khelaifi suggests UEFA will investigate ´unfair´ Barcelona asset sales

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi labelled Barcelona s methods of raising funds unfair and suggested UEFA will investigate the Blaugrana s financial conduct.

Despite facing mounting debt levels and struggling to meet LaLiga s strict salary limits, Barca completed big-money moves for Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde and Raphinha – as well as signing several free agents – during the recent transfer window.

Barca sold 25 per cent of their future LaLiga media rights, as well as a 49 per cent share of their in-house production company Barca Studios, to raise funds for their transfer activity.

President Joan Laporta referred to those measures as economic levers that were activated to improve the squad, but Al-Khelaifi has cast doubt upon their legali…

FIFA World Cup Qualifying: Scotland 0 Belgium 2

Belgium eased one step closer to a FIFA World Cup qualifying spot with a 2-0 win over Scotland at Hampden Park on Friday.

Steven Defour and Kevin Mirallas were on hand to guide the visitors to the victory in the pouring rain in Glasgow, earning just their second win on Scottish soil in six fixtures.

And with Scotland unable to qualify for Brazil next year, their visitors continue to top Group A, five points clear of Croatia with just two games left to play.

The match saw a number of changes for Gordon Strachan s men, who had David Marshall in goal following Allan McGregor s suspension, and Leigh Griffiths up front.

The 23-year-old filled the void left by Kenny Miller, who retired following Scotland s marginal 3-2 defeat to England at Wembley, after netting 18 go…

Martino unpertubed by style questions

Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino is unconcerned by question marks over his side s style of play this season.

The Catalan giants have won all five of their La Liga fixtures this campaign and comprehensively beat Rayo Vallecano 4-0 away on Saturday, but have drawn criticism from some quarters over the manner of their victories.

Barca enjoyed 46 per cent possession during their win at the Estadio de Vallecas the first time since February 2010 they have had less of the ball than their opponents in a top-flight fixture.

But ahead of Tuesday s game with Real Sociedad at the Camp Nou, Martino insisted he is not worried by that fact.

No, I m not upset at all, he said. As I said, I find it normal that there s a bit of controversy in these situations as Barcelona had ex…

Ndong sacked by Sunderland

Sunderland have terminated the contract of club record signing Didier Ndong, according to the Telegraph.

The move comes after the Gabon international only returned to training on Monday having failed to find a new club over the summer – a serious breach of his contract.

Ndong penned a five-year deal with the Black Cats upon signing in 2016 and made thirty-one appearances for the club in his first season, scoring his one and only goal in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Needless to say, that was not enough to help the North East outfit avoid dropping to the Championship, while he failed to score in eighteen Championship appearances before he moved to Watford on loan as his parent club suffered a second straight relegation.

He didn’t make a single a…

Bertrand wants England to keep up with Jones´ rugby stars

Ryan Bertrand described a meeting with England rugby coach Eddie Jones as a massive inspiration as the nation s footballers seek to emulate the exploits of their 15-a-side compatriots.

Jones took over a team fresh from a humiliating group-stage exit at the 2015 World Cup on home soil and transformed their fortunes, winning two Six Nations titles and completing a clean sweep on a tour of Australia en route to equalling New Zealand s record of 18 consecutive wins.

Gareth Southgate has been tasked with masterminding a similar revival for the football team and Bertrand was also full of praise for the 46-year-old, who brought in Jones for a training-ground visit in the hope the Australian s winning mentality would rub off on them.

It s a massive inspiration, all of …

Spezia 1-2 Milan: Maldini and Diaz send Pioli´s men top of Serie A

Daniel Maldini was on target in his first Serie A start as Milan relied on Brahim Diaz s late winner to edge past Spezia 2-1 on Saturday.

Maldini, son of Italy and Rossoneri legend Paolo, enjoyed a dream maiden top-flight start as he headed Stefano Pioli s side into the lead after the interval at the Alberto Picco Stadium.

However, Daniele Verde s deflected effort levelled things up with just over 10 minutes to go before Diaz restored the visitors lead in the closing stages.

Milan banished their demons from the shock 2-0 defeat in this fixture last term to move a point clear at the summit, though the chasing pack do have a game in hand.

Goals from Maldini and , and that s three points added to the tally!

Haaland future undecided – Dortmund CEO Watzke

Even though Erling Haaland is widely expected to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season, club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has told Sport1 that the decision about the future of the Norwegian striker hasn t been decided yet.

The 21-year-old, missed the clash against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday through a muscular issue, is contracted to the Bundesliga side until the summer of 2024, but it s been reported far and wide that the contract contains a €75 million release clause which kicks in next year. Asked directly about the existence of such a clause, Watzke refused to either confirm or deny the rumour.

Real Madrid believe, according to , they would be at the head of the queue if Haaland does leave the Signal Iduna Park, with president Florentino Perez inten…

Boro favourites for promotion next season

When Middlesbrough were relegated from the Premier League in 2009 many, including me, thought that the club would bounce straight back into the top flight.

However they could only manage a midtable finish in the Championship last season.

Changes

Middlesbrough started last season with Gareth Southgate in charge but the former England international was fired in October.

Scottish boss Gordon Strachan took over from Southgate but the club couldn’t challenge for a playoff position, finishing 11th in the Championship.

Criticism

Strachan was heavily criticised for his performance as Middlesbrough boss last season. He had almost a season to make the team his own but failed to even achieve a playoff place. However it looks like he needed more ti…

Juventus loan Falque to Villarreal

Italian giants Juventus have loaned youngster Iago Falque to Spanish La Liga outfit Villarreal CF. The attacking midfielder, who turned 20 in April this year, will play for Villarreal s reserve team. The Yellow Submarines also have the option to buy his services on a permanent basis at the end of the loan.

Vigo born Falque was in the youth ranks of both Real Madrid and Barcelona before joining Juventus in 2008.

Falque was part of the Spanish U-17 team that competed at the 2007 UEFA European Football Championship in Belgium. Spain ended up winning that tournament by beating England in the final.
