Transfer wrap: Liverpool close in on Enrique, Pato sticks with AC

Liverpool are on the verge of signing full-back Jose Enrique from Newcastle United after the clubs reportedly agreed to a fee on Wednesday.

The English Premier League sides are trying to finalise the

details of a deal worth around 8 million pounds.

Once a deal is struck, Enrique will be given permission to

discuss personal terms with Liverpool and undergo a medical.

The Anfield club hope

to complete the transfer by the end of the week in preparation for their

Premier League opener against Sunderland at home on August 13.

The Spaniard s contract at Newcastle expires in mid-2012 and

last week he was fined two weeks wages for a Twitter rant directed towards

owner Mike Ashley.

Hamburg ends Stevens talks

Hamburg sporting director Frank Arnesen has indicated talks with Huub Stevens over the club s vacant manager position have broken down.

The Dutch tactician had been strongly linked with a return to Hamburg who he coached in 2007 and 2008 following the sacking of Michael Oenning on Monday.

Hamburg and Stevens had been in discussions over the weekend, but it is now believed the Bundesliga side have put an end to negotiations after learning the 57-year-old coach was also in talks with Schalke.

The coach we want needs to be 100 percent convinced of our concept, Arnesen told Bild.

Schalke are also in the market for a new coach after Ralf Rangnick resigned on Thursday due to health problems.

The latest development is likely to fuel speculation about H…

Sissoko: France can go far at World Cup

Moussa Sissoko is confident France have the ability to reach the latter stages of the FIFA World Cup.

Didier Deschamps side have displayed superb form so far in Brazil, comfortably seeing off 10-man Honduras 3-0 before hammering Switzerland 5-2 to all but secure a place in the last 16.

France now require only a point against Ecuador in the Maracana on Wednesday to finish top of Group E and guarantee progression to the next stage.

And Sissoko, who was on target in the win over Switzerland, is optimistic when it comes to assessing the prospects of French success.

We ve been regularly improving our standard since the second leg against Ukraine (when France overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to win a qualification play-off 3-2), Sissoko told FIFA.

La Liga Preview: Real out to break club record at Malaga

La Liga leaders Real Madrid can set a new club record of 16 consecutive victories in all competitions when they visit Malaga on Saturday.

Wednesday s 1-0 UEFA Champions League win over Basel was their 15th successive triumph, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting his 26th goal of the campaign to seal top spot in Group B.

Real have twice achieved 15 straight wins in the past in the 1960-61 season under Miguel Munoz and in 2011-12 when Jose Mourinho was at the helm.

And three points at La Rosaleda would give the bulk of Carlo Ancelotti’s team that claimed La Decima a 10th European title in May another prestigious entry into Real s catalogue of phenomenal achievements.

Javi Gracia s Malaga were enjoying a purple patch of their own, five consecutive La Liga wi…

Arsenal should sign Mahrez before they lose him for good

Algerian international winger Riyad Mahrez of Leicester City.

Arsenal are still biding their time over making an approach for Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez this summer and risk letting other clubs in the equation if they continue to hold off.

AS Roma have made two bids for the Algerian international and could procure his signature if they make an improved offer that meets Leicester’s demands.

Arsenal were very keen on Mahrez 12 months ago and remain interested this summer, so does Arsene Wenger need to make an approach before it’s too late?

Last season’s inconsistency raised doubts over true quality

Riyad Mahrez came to Arsenal’s attention after scoring 17 goals and making 11 assists from 36 Premier League games in 2015/16 as Leicest…

Galatasaray confirm talks with Manchester City midfielder Fernando

Galatasaray have confirmed that they are in talks with Fernando over a possible move from Manchester City.

The 30-year-old is in discussions with the Turkish Super Lig side after being deemed surplus to requirements by City manager Pep Guardiola.

The Brazilian made only five starts in the Premier League last season and was left out of the squad for the pre-season tour of the United States.

Fernando suggested last month that City would be willing to accept an offer of between €7million and €8m for his signature.

The midfielder moved to the Etihad Stadium for a fee in the region of £12m in June 2014 but has struggled to secure a regular spot in the starting line-up.

Galatasaray had been hoping to sign Marouane Fellaini from Manchester United bu…

Solskjaer surprises Fernandes with Man Utd captaincy after hailing his ´spark´

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer surprised Bruno Fernandes at a joint media conference by announcing he would captain Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday after hailing the Portuguese s recent impact.

Fernandes has been a revelation since his arrival from Sporting CP in the January transfer window, scoring 12 goals in 22 appearances across all competitions during the second half of the 2020-21 season.

He also ended the campaign as the club s joint highest goal creator in the Premier League, sitting alongside Marcus Rashford with seven assists.

The 26-year-old has picked up where he left off this term, with his fine goal in United s 4-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United on Saturday taking his tally to three goals in five appearances.

Villarreal sack Escriba after Getafe humbling

Villarreal have sacked head coach Fran Escriba after a 4-0 thrashing at his former side Getafe that left the club 14th in LaLiga.

The Yellow Submarine finished fifth last season, but an indifferent start to the new campaign has seen Escriba lose his job.

Coincidentally, he suffered the same fate at Getafe in April 2016 after a defeat to Villarreal.

Fellow coaches Josep Alcacer and Jose Mascaros have also departed the club.

Villarreal delayed training on Monday ahead of the expected announcement of Escriba s replacement later in the day.

4- Getafe hadn t won for a four goal margin (at least) in La Liga since October 2015 against Las Palmas, 4-0 under Fran Escribá. Feast.

Maguire: Abuse of brave Rashford, Sancho and Saka is terrible

England defender Harry Maguire says he is not surprised by the terrible racist abuse directed towards England team-mates Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka.

Rashford, Sancho and Saka all missed from 12 yards as England went down to a 3-2 penalty shoot-out defeat against Italy in Sunday s Euro 2020 final, which finished 1-1 after extra time.

The trio were quickly subjected to vile abuse on social media, while a mural of Rashford in his native Withington was defaced.

People flocked to the artwork in the Manchester suburb to attach messages of support and admiration for Rashford, who campaigned successfully for free school meals provision to be extended for struggling families during the coronavirus pandemic.

Those scenes were representative of a…

Pochettino: Preparation key to make sure ´last season never happens again´

Mauricio Pochettino is laying the groundwork to ensure there is no repeat of a disappointing 2020-21 season at Paris Saint-Germain.

Having been appointed in January, the former Southampton and Tottenham head coach oversaw a frustrating time in Paris as his team were eliminated at the Champions League semi-final stage by Manchester City and finished runners-up in Ligue 1 to Lille.

That second-place finish ended a run of three successive league titles for PSG and Pochettino is aware that corrections are needed if they are to go one better in the 2021-22 campaign.

A strong transfer window, however, has further boosted the French giants, as they have added Sergio Ramos and Achraf Hakimi to their ranks, alongside Euro 2020 shoot-out hero Gianluigi Donnarumma.
